HORSHAM
ACCORDION BAND
The band, based in Horsham, West Sussex, was formed in 1987 when local accordion teacher John Coles got together with friends and pupils and started playing for local events. There are currently 10 members in the band - 8 playing piano accordions, Diana the button accordion player and Kevin the keyboard player providing the bass line. Occasionally a friendly drummer is borrowed for a special event.
We are always on the lookout for new accordion playing members, a keyboard player and a drummer. Does this appeal to you? - please do get in touch with us.

THE
ACCORDION is a musical instrument operated by air pressure.
It consists of three different parts: the right hand keyboard for the
melody, the bellows and the left hand keyboard (or buttons) for the
accompaniment.
The
accordion’s sound is produced by the reed, a small metal plate on which a thin
steel strip is mounted, which oscillates with the movement of the air produced
by the compression of the bellows.
A
Viennese man Cyril Damian, of Armenian descent patented the first accordion in
Paris on 6th May 1829 – a small four octave instrument that was the
basis for the development of this absolutely revolutionary musical instrument.
In Italy the accordion first appeared in 1863. A pilgrim passing through the territory of Castelfidardo on his pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of the “Black Madonna” of Loreto, stopped by chance in Antonio Soprani’s farmhouse. The pilgrim was carrying a rudimentary music box with him. This queer object aroused the interest of Paolo Soprani, Antonio’s son, who dismantled it and perceived the possibility of building a similar instrument. The accordion was given to him as a gift and Paolo successfully opened a small handicraft laboratory and sold the aesthetically and musically improved product to the considerable flow of passing pilgrims.
The rest is history…..!
